Notes
Leg 24 of Ramble Round the Rockies. From Walla Walla we head for home back to Spokane. I hope you enjoyed your Ramble. Walla Walla is located in the County of the same name in the SE region of Washington. It is famous for its sweet onions. Many wineries are located in the area. The airport was an Air Force base during WWII. The 91st Bomb Group lays claim to being the first Army Air Forces outfit to utilize the Walla Walla Base. They trained and learned to fly the B17. The Group went on to distinguish itself in combat over Europe. Several of these crews made outstanding records during their tour of duty and were well publicized upon their return to the States with names such as Jack the Ripper Memphis Belle and Delta Rebel. The Memphis Belle became the first B17 to complete 25 missions in Europe.
